Preformed Koi Pond

Probably the quickest and easiest way to get your own pond in your garden is to buy a preformed Koi Pond. You can find them in various shapes and sizes. Some of them even imitate natural rock formations, complete with their own rock shaped, cascading water features to add to the overall effect.

There are a lot of benefits to going the route of buying a preformed Koi Pond, though it sometimes takes away some of the satisfaction and sense of accomplishment you might gain from building your own.

Some of these benefits are:
  1. You are assured of a solid, leak free pond. Often when building your own pond, your biggest challenge is to seal the pond completely.
  2. A preformed Koi Pond fits in well with a small, structured garden.
  3. It's easy and quick to install. In most cases the hardest work you have to do is to dig the hole you will be placing the pond in. Often these ponds are raised above the ground so you just need to place it firmly where you want it.
  4. Most of these ponds are already visually attractive.

However, as with anything, where there are positives, there are negatives:

  1. These preformed Koi Ponds can be very expensive. It is often a cheaper excercise to build your own.
  2. They can be a bit fragile. Be careful when transporting the pond to your home, to not damage it and cause cracks that might leak. Also be aware of sharp objects that might puncture the structure.
  3. Once you have installed the pond, you will have to replace it completely if you want to expand. If you build it yourself, you can always make adjustments later.

All in all though, getting a preformed Koi Pond is not a bad idea. I have just installed a preformed kidney shaped pond (nice and big), and I am very happy with it thus far. My previous pond, I built myself. I still haven't decided which one I prefer though.

I love Koi Ponds!

I love Koi Ponds. Every house I've ever lived in, had one. It's a passion. I can sit for hours just staring into the water, looking at the fish carefully floating into the open from their hiding places. And nothing quite compares to the sense of achievement when your Koi produce young, and you can watch them grow.

And it's more than just the actual pond. It's the effect it has on your whole garden. It provides a focul point and creates a sense of calm and tranquility. And you don't have to have a big garden to have a pond.

What I really like about a pond, is how it is much less maintenance than a fish tank. No constant cleaning. No constant feeding. Once your pond has become established, it becomes a self sustaining environment. The most important maintenance task is to install a pump with a decent filter to make sure there is a constant flow of water, providing oxygen and making sure the water doesn't get stale and starts to go bad.

I'm currently installing a new pond at home. This time round I have gone with the option of installing a pre-cast fibre-glass pond. It's still a work in progress, and I will be sharing with you in the weeks to come, all the lessons I have learned from doing it myself. I'm by no means a handy man. And that's what makes owning a pond so great. You don't have to be a handy man (or woman) to be able to build your own.

I will be sharing with you everything from the actual pond, attachments needed (Like pumps, etc) and even beautifying your pond with water features and plants. Of course, I will not be forgetting the most important part. The actual Koi!

As I stated when I started this post, I'm passionate about Koi Ponds. I hope that I can affect you with even a small bit of that passion, so that before you know it, you are out in the garden, building something that gives you a great sense of achievement.
